Today for #TakeBackPride we’re celebrating Dublin-born lightweight boxer Kellie Harrington. One of Ireland’s most successful sportswomen, Kellie has won both the World and European championships, and became an Olympic gold medalist in Tokyo.
Though she is openly lesbian and married her partner Mandy in 2022, Kellie admits she wants to be recognised for her sporting achievements, not her sexuality.
"My sexuality has nothing got to do with that medal and what I've achieved."
Kellie has faced abuse for bravely speaking out against men in women’s sports.
“Trans athletes should compete against each other, not women. I dread to think about boxing against a trans athlete.”
