Let’s #TakeBackPride for Pete Burns, frontman of the 1980s pop group Dead or Alive, who rose to fame with the hit "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)". He was known for his androgyny and later for his cross-dressing and cosmetic surgery after appearing on Celebrity Big Brother.
Pete was derided as a freak by the British media for his gender non-conformity and continually faced questioning regarding his "identity" as a man. He never, however, claimed to be transgender and was steadfast in his commitment to acknowledging biological reality.
When asked "Do you think of yourself as a man or a woman?" he said: "I think of myself totally as a man."
He is also quoted as saying "It freaks me that someone could think I was a woman. Don't get me wrong – I love women; I love men, too, and I'm very proud to be a man."
