Sappho

Today we #TakeBackPride for Sappho the ancient Greek lyric poet whose works featured profound expressions of her love for other women. Thanks to her, we have the words sapphic and lesbian.

Early translators heterosexualised much of her work and it is said the medieval church disapproved of her morals, publicly destroying her work during an era where homosexuality was frowned upon.

Many sources attempt to call the origins of lesbianism “queer”, bisexual or straight.

Sappho has held a special place in the lesbian community for centuries and attempts to “queer” her, tarnishes her memory.

Sappho and her works are celebrated globally for her expressions of female love.
